Teen Civil Rights Journey

What will my child do on the trip?
Participants on the trip will

Learn about the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s in the place where it happened

Explore how Jews were and are involved in this movement.

Increase awareness about various struggles for civil rights that still exist today

Travel to the places where many of the major events of the Civil Rights Movement occurred

Reflect on our experience and our own privilege, and what we can do to bring more freedom into our world.
What does the trip cost and when is payment due?

The total cost of the trip is $1800. A $250 deposit is required when signing up and the remainder of the balance is due on 12/1/24. If finances present a barrier to participation for your teen please reach out to Rabbi Zach Plesent via email at zplesent@tiwestport.org.
What happens if my child gets ill on the trip?

We will have basic medications and first aid supplies available with us on the trip for headache, cold, digestive concerns etc. If your child needs additional medical care we will reach out to you to discuss bringing them to an urgent care/walk in center. If emergency care is needed, we will take them to the closest emergency room and be in contact with you to discuss next steps.
Will my child need spending money on the trip?
When and how will I hear from you and my child on the trip?

Staff will reach out to parents when landing in Atlanta, before taking off at the end of the trip and when we land back in the New York area. Additionally, they will email once during the trip on the second night. In addition to this formal contact, there will be Instagram and Facebook posts with images from our trip on our Temple Israel accounts. Each evening the teens will contribute to a trip blog to keep their parents and the community informed.
Is my child allowed to bring their cell phone on the trip?
My child is on prescription medication, how is that handled on the trip?
How is Temple Israel ensuring security on the trip?

We understand that questions regarding safety and security are of critical importance to potential participants and their families. The Temple Israel staff is confident that this program is safe and secure.The trip providers we are traveling with are familiar with the communities they work within and also working to ensure safety. We will use their guidance and knowledge to inform our decisions about security. If at any time there is a safety or security concern, we will not hesitate to alter the program itinerary to ensure safety. If a change occurs we will be in touch with you as soon as possible to inform you of the new schedule.

There are 2 meals on the trip that will not be included in the package cost. If finances present a barrier to participation for your teen please reach out to Rabbi Zach Plesent via email at zplesent@tiwestport.org.
