L’Taken Social Justice Trip

What will my child do on the trip?

On this trip, teens will have the experience to learn more about important issues for Reform Jews. Students will learn about the background of important policy issues for greater understanding and engagement in the national dialogue, as well as how the pursuit of justice is a pillar of Jewish tradition. Then they will lobby in their congressperson’s office. This itinerary is subject to change. For parent resource information, click here.
What does the trip cost and when is payment due?

The total cost of the trip is $1195. A $150 deposit is required when signing up and the remainder of the balance is due on 12/15/25. If finances present a barrier to participation for your teen, please reach out to Rabbi Zach Plesent via email at zplesent@tiwestport.org.
What happens if my child gets ill on the trip?

We will have basic medications and first aid supplies available with us on the trip for headache, cold, digestive concerns, etc. If your child needs additional medical care, we will reach out to you to discuss bringing them to an urgent care/walk-in center. If emergency care is needed, we will take them to the closest emergency room and be in contact with you to discuss next steps.
Will my child need spending money on the trip?

Yes, your child will either need to pack a nut free lunch to bring with them on the train, or bring money to purchase lunch in the dining car (there are very limited options). Additionally, if your child would like to purchase any souvenirs, they will need to bring money to do so.
When and how will I hear from you and my child on the trip?

Staff will reach out to parents upon arrival and at the end of the trip and when we land back in the New York area. Additionally, they will email once during the trip on the second night. In addition to this formal contact, there will be Instagram and Facebook posts with images from our trip on our Temple Israel accounts. Each evening the teens will contribute to a trip blog to keep their parents and the community informed.
Is my child allowed to bring their cell phone on the trip?
My child is on prescription medication, how is that handled on the trip?
How is Temple Israel ensuring security on the trip?

We understand that questions regarding safety and security are of critical importance to potential participants and their families. The Temple Israel staff is confident that this program is safe and secure.The trip providers we are traveling with are familiar with the communities they work within and also working to ensure safety. We will use their guidance and knowledge to inform our decisions about security. If at any time there is a safety or security concern, we will not hesitate to alter the program itinerary to ensure safety. If a change occurs we will be in touch with you as soon as possible to inform you of the new schedule.

Immigration Justice Trip

What will my child do on the trip?

As Jews, we are taught to support the orphan, the widow and the stranger 36 times in the Torah. With immigration being one of the most pressing issues in the American political landscape, we know our students can benefit from immersing themselves in the immigration landscape on the ground level. We will visit the US-Mexico border, meet with DACA recipients and former ICE agents, and study with a rabbi about what makes immigration a Jewish issue. Teens will have a chance to bond with their peers in the evenings while doing activities like bowling or laser tag.

Additionally, if your child would like to purchase souvenirs or snacks/a meal at the airport, they should bring a little spending money.
