Dear Friends,

A particular verse from our Yom Kippur Torah reading rings especially true this year: “I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life, so that you and your children may live.” (Deuteronomy 30:19)

It is all too easy to see only the curses of life before us. Israel remains at war, our hostages remain underground, and Jews around the world are threatened and attacked in the streets. Society seems more volatile and uncertain than in the past, and many are more fearful than they have ever been.

Amidst our chaotic world, we will soon have the opportunity to gather together in sacred Jewish community for our High Holy Days. We will sing, pray, learn, and grow together. And perhaps this year, the reminder from our Torah can provide much-needed guidance and inspiration.

Both life and death, both blessing and curse will lie before us in the New Year. In the face of everything, God implores us to choose life, to lean into blessing, joy and celebration.

Let us choose to walk this path together, towards brighter and more joyful days ahead.
