Grade 4
A slightly modified version of Pirke Avot 2:21 teaches us that it’s not upon you to complete the work, but not are you free to desist from starting it. In every age, many Jews and non-Jews have had the courage to step up to the plate and take the steps to better the world – some openly and some in secret. People who do are upstanders and the moment they step up to the plate are called “Lo Aleha” moments. In this curriculum, we will first study and have fun with 6 upstanders who have done the work in secret and have impacted the Jewish world in a positive sense. We will point out additional upstanders and will also look to ourselves and our classmates to find upstanding actions. Fourth graders will review the prayers learned in third grade and will learn the Barchu, Shema and V’ahavtah.
