Israel Engagement Group

The Israel Engagement Group (IEG) at Temple Israel of Westport was formed as a response to the tragic events of October 7 and is committed to raising awareness, fostering connections, and providing essential financial support to vital organizations in Israel. Our mission is to uplift those impacted and ensure that our support directly aids efforts that promote resilience and healing in Israel.

55th Paratrooper Brigade

The 55th Paratroop Brigade is a reserve infantry brigade in the IDF that desperately needs personal items and financial support not provided by the Israeli government. Through our relationship with Major Itzik Yanai, a reservist with the 55^thParatroopers, the IEG has provided personal items requested by the soldiers on the front lines. We continue to support Major Yanai who will be visiting Temple Israel on November 10^th.
Kibbutz Nirim

Kibbutz Nirim is in the Western Negev, one mile from the Gaza boarder. In the early hours of October 7th, Hamas terrorists invaded Kibbutz Nirim, killing five kibbutz members and abducting five. Sadly, two of the hostages have since been killed. The terrorists burned and destroyed over 30 homes, set fire to hundreds of acres of open fields and destroyed over 60% of Nirim’s fields and plantations. IEG has raised money to help with the psychological aftermath of the attack and will continue to provide support for the rebuilding of the Kibbutz.
Sheba Hospital

Sheba Hospital is Israel’s top hospital and rehabilitation center for wounded soldiers and hostages. Sheba is the location for Israel’s National Center for the Rehabilitation of Injured Soldiers. The hospital provides rehabilitation, prosthetics, and physical therapy. In addition, hostages were brought to Sheba Hospital upon their release to be examined and treated.
Magen David Adom

Magen David Adom (MDA) provides all emergency services, disaster relief, and blood supply. Although MDA’s role is mandated by the Israeli government, it is not a government agency. As Israel’s official representative to the International Red Cross, MDA is precluded from accepting government support for its general operations. As a result, MDA relies on support from donors, including those from the United States. IEG is raising money to purchase an electric generator to be used when the electric grid is incapacitated during an attack.
